Greg Vanney contract situation remains major question as LA Galaxy continue winless run
One of the many questions surrounding the LA Galaxy is the future of its MLS Cup winning coach
As the LA Galaxy navigate a turbulent 2025 season, all eyes are not just on the players on the pitch, but on the man leading them from the sidelines.
Greg Vanney, now in his fourth year at the helm, is in the final year of his contract with the club, and his future still remains a major question.
The SoCal club’s qualification in the MLS Cup playoffs last season triggered a clause in his contract that extended him for the 2025 season, according to multiple reports.
Vanney led the Galaxy to MLS Cup victory in 2024 - the second time he has managed a team to win the top trophy in U.S. soccer. He has a record of 69W-40D-62L in 171 matches in charge of Galaxy.
Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times first reported on Tuesday that both sides are “making no progress on a new deal”.
During Wednesday’s media availability, Vanney addressed his contract situation with reporters.
When asked if uncertainty about his future with the club was something that’s been on his mind this season, Vanney said, “I don’t know, maybe you know something I don't know.”
“I’m just focusing on improving this team and the ways that we can get out of our results. Some of its day-to-day, some of its longer-term, but all of those things are in discussion. When I say longer term, I'm talking about the pieces that we need to keep improving,” said Vanney.
“There are short-term and long-term views on how we continue to build ourselves back into the championship team that we know we can become over time. And that's all those things are in discussion every single day. So in terms of uncertainty, I guess that's on your side,” he added.
When asked if he feels confident about being the man to lead the LA Galaxy in the coming years, he said, “What I would say to you is, I know where the process is at, and you don't.”
“I feel comfortable that I'm not here to do anything other than to talk about where our team is today and where we are tomorrow where we are this weekend”.
